Leeton Silo Painting Project
Leeton is a town within the Riverina region of New South Wales. My wife and I were staying in Leeton as we were painting farms in Narrandera which is just a short drive from Leeton. At this time, I was hired by a farmer who wanted me to paint their portable mother silo.
A mother silo is a large central storage silo used to hold bulk materials before they are transferred to smaller silos. My clients wanted their silo painted from green to silver with protective coatings.
Silos are the second most frequently requested painting projects I undertake, after roofs. While I love painting roofs, I really love the challenge of painting silos. Mother silos are the ultimate challenge!
Farm Painting in Leeton
As always, prior to painting, I pressure-cleaned the silo. This silo was actually in very good condition, but it was coated in a layer of red Australian dust which obviously had to be removed. Once cleaned, the silo was left overnight to dry.
I taped dust sheets around the wheels of this silo so that they would be protected from the painting process. I also tapped around the rubber leads of the silo.

Next, I applied a penetrol-based primer to the silo. This primer serves two purposes. Firstly, the primer helps the paint stick evenly to the surface of the silo. Secondly, (and most importantly) the primer ‘holds back’ any rust and stops it from progressing further.
Stopping rust in its tracks is one of the main reasons I am hired by farmers to protect their roofs, silos, and sheds. The specialised aluminium-based paint I used for this project will also help prevent further rusting.
While I usually give silos, roofs, and sheds two coats of paint, I dusted this silo in three very thin layers. I prefer to use three thin years for very complex structures as this ensures that all areas are evenly coated.
