Stockinbingal Farm Painting and Restoration

Recently, I was hired by a farmer in Stockinbingal to paint their roofs, silos and sheds. This farmer was a previous customer who my dad and I had done restorations for 10 years ago - he seen my advertisements around town and decided to invite me back.

Initially, I was hired for one or two items around the farm and ended up taking on more work as the weeks past. This was one of the biggest (and most exciting) projects I had completed within the small town of Stockinbingal and I loved every moment of it.

Stockinbingal is located in South West Slopes region of New South Wales. I often work this region as, despite having a low population, it has a thriving farming community. The town of Stockinbingal (Stockie) has a population of less than 400.

Here is a breakdown of the project:

Stockinbingal Silo Painting

Firstly, the farmer requested that I paint his portable silo. This silo was starting to show some signs of rust and the farmer wanted to tackle this before it became too much of an issue.

I power-washed the silo and tapped up any rubber leads to protect them from the painting process. The next day, I applied a penetrol-based protective coating which has two benefits.

A protective coating creates a smooth surface which ensures that the paint coats evenly. However, most important of all, this coating contains a special element which prevents rust from progressing further. This way, the farmer can rest-assure his silo is well-protected from the harsh Australian elements.

Finally, I applied two coats of paint. Not only does the paint look good, but it further protects the silo. Here are the results:

Stockinbingal Roof Painting

Initially, I was hired to paint the portable silo but after seeing the results of the project, the owner of this farm had asked me if I had time to paint a couple of shed roofs around the farm. I obviously said yes and quickly got to work.

As I did with the silo, I pressure-washed all roofs and replaced any broken or missing screws. I then applied a penetrol-based primer. This primer has been specially designed to prevent the progression of any further rusting.

Despite the fact that the silo was painted in white, I recommended to the farmer that we paint the roofs in silver. This particular paint we used is a aluminium-based paint that will add additional heat and rust protection to the roofs.

Here are the shed roofs that I renovated:

Toilet Roof

The final roof I washed, treated, and painted was a very small toilet roof. This roof was no more than a few feet long, but a good painting ensured that it matched the other painted roofs on this Stockinbingal farm.

I painted the roof of this small toilet so that it would match the other roof on the farm.

Stockinbingal Additional Silo Sections

Finally, the farmer asked if I could take care of a few smaller silo-related tasks around the property. While these types of jobs are not usually undertaken as standalone projects, I am happy to complete them when I am already on site as part of a larger painting contract.

This farm contained a couple of silo cones which were supporting aluminium-based silos. The silos themselves did not need to be painted, but the farmer asked me to wash, treat, and paint the silo cones. I am happy with how they both turned out.

Silo Cutouts

The silos which my father and I had previously painted were perfectly fine years after we painted them (which is always nice to see!) However, the farmer did have additional sections cut into the silos, and these needed to be painted.

I had washed, rust-treated, and painted these sections on several silos within this farm. Here is an example of one of the sections:
