Roof Painting in Canowindra, New South Wales
Recently, I worked on an exciting project. The assignment? Painting a roof just outside of Cowra, in Canowindra, New South Wales.
As my clients had requested such a massive change from rusty silver to a lively red, I knew this restoration would turn out awesome! The red colour not only gave the property a fresh look, but also tied in with traditional farm buildings.
Here is what the roof looked like before I painted it:
Canowindra is a small town close to Cowra with a population just shy of 3,000 people. The owners of this roof were a farming family who called me in to tackle some of the buildings on their property.
(Soon, I will post an article here about a shed restoration in Canowindra - that project was also on this property, but at a later date).
Our Process
As the vast majority of painting I do is for farmers, a typical workday of mine involves painting roofs, silos, and sheds one of two colours: silver or white. While I do enjoy painting these colours, this particular roof in Canowindra gave me the opportunity to break free from the norm.
This farming family in Canowindra wanted something different for their roof and they chose a stunning red colour.
As always, I started the process by power-washing the roof. I believe that power-washing is always 100% necessary for any job, as mould and mildew must be removed from the area for an even finish.
Once I power-washed, I sprayed the roof with a protective coating. Canowindra is consistently being battered by the hot New South Wales heat so, as you can imagine, the roofs in this area can really benefit from protection. Here is what the roof looked like once protected:
After I had sprayed this protective coating, the roof was starting to take shape! However, I wasn’t finished. Next, it was time to apply the colour.
The Australian heat can wreak havoc on house roofs. Because of this, I use a specialised roof membrane instead of a regular paint. Roof membranes do everything a regular paint does. However, they offer superior UV resistance, so they are perfect for Australian house roofs.
For this family’s roof, I applied two coats of Dulux Acratex Roof Membrane in Tuscan Red. Again, this membrane helps prevent fading, cracking, and rust, meaning this roof will stay protected for many years to come.
Here are the final results:
Not only am I ecstatic with the results of this transformation, but my clients were also very happy with their roof. In fact, they later invited me back to restore their farm sheds, which I will write about at a later date.
